Long, long ago, according to Tibetan legend, a powerful god named Dago fell in love with a beautiful goddess named Semo. He gave her a magical mirror made of wind and clouds. But a jealous demon caused her to drop it, and it shattered into 118 sparkling, colorful pieces. These pieces fell to earth and became the stunning lakes of Jiuzhaigou. That’s why the local Tibetan and Qiang people call this place home and protect its spirit.
The science is just as cool! Earthquakes and glaciers carved this valley thousands of years ago. The magical water colors? That’s nature’s science lab at work! The lakes are filled with minerals like calcium carbonate and are so clear because of a special process called travertine deposition. Sunlight hits the water and the bright white lakebeds, reflecting and scattering light to create those unbelievable blues and greens. It’s like the water is putting on a light show just for you!
Jiuzhaigou is a bustling wildlife city in the forest. You have to be quiet and patient to spot its citizens, but they’re all around!

Start at Shuzheng Lakes, a chain of 19 terraced lakes like giant, colorful steps. Then, feel the mist on your face at Shuzheng Waterfalls, where the water crashes down through trees in hundreds of streams. It’s powerful and loud!
Hop on the eco-friendly bus (they help protect the park!) to the top of the right branch. Here you’ll find Jianzhuhai (Arrow Bamboo Lake), named for the bamboo pandas love to eat. But the true showstopper is Wuhua Hai (Five-Flower Lake). This lake is the heart of the magic. Its waters are a swirling mix of turquoise, yellow, and emerald because of ancient fallen trees coated in minerals on the bottom. It’s so clear, you can see right down into a sunken forest!
At the end of the left branch is Chang Hai (Long Lake), the largest and deepest lake in Jiuzhaigou. It’s a deep, majestic blue, surrounded by snowy mountains. On the way back down, stop at Nuorilang Waterfall. It’s the widest travertine waterfall in China, a massive, roaring curtain of water over 270 meters wide.
